Experiences and perspectives of Wikipedia use in higher education
Abstract University teaching is confronted with strUniversity teaching is confronted with strong challenges through the emergence of new participatory web applications. While social software tools are strongly applied by students, instructors are often reluctant to adapt them in their teaching practice. Only recently have instructors begun to more strongly apply one of the most commonly used Web 2.0 applications, the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia, in university teaching. Based on an overview of international university projects, this contribution presents general data on the background, objectives, teaching approaches, assignment and feedback forms of Wikipedia-related courses and discusses adequate methods of enabling instructors to apply wiki systems within their teaching. apply wiki systems within their teaching.

Conclusion The students' positive attitude towards WeThe students' positive attitude towards Web 2.0 media drove instructors in many countries to apply the online encyclopaedia as a tool for teaching. Diverse factors such as the authentic learning environmentm the didactically activating method of collaborative work and the text production for a very large audience create strong motivational impulses for students to carry out Wikipedia assignments, When students are held accountable to a global audience for what they are doing, they feel more devoted to their work. The report of a majority of instructors that used Wikipedia in their courses indicated that new didactical terrain has been explored with mostly positive results . growing amount of articles contributed to the English-language Wikipedia edition during coursework as documented on the "articles as assignments" page (Wikipedia: Category: Wikipedia articles as assignments. 2007 et seqq., cf. Figure 3) proves that substantial results have beeen achieved in a large amount pf seminars. The online encyclopaedia has proved useful for objectives such as methodically training research skils, for contributing to the quality of knowledge acquisition, for training methodical and collaborative writing techniques. or for letting students consider different perspectives on controversial subjects. Furthermore, courses with WIkipedia use require more preparationg time from instructors than conventional courses do. An essential precondition for a successful application of WIkipedia is that courses are diligently prepared in the real as well as i the virtual world. Course work with Wikipedia can only take place successfully if instructors are prepared to make themselves familiar with central Wikipedia conventions and if communtiy precepts are taken into considerationntiy precepts are taken into consideration
